Crafty?

Hi!

I haven't been getting much sleep and I can't believe I am still awake.  I'm so in a blind craft mode, that that is all I am doing and thinking.  I think I told you that I am getting ready for a Craft Fair on Black Friday weekend.  Let me tell you what I am working on, as soon as I get my little painted pictures done.

I made a batch of these key holders, each one is different.  Do you have a hard time finding key holders too?  I thought it might serve a need and be cute too.

Sorry, I am too tired tonight, and it's taking so long to up-load more pictures but in the mean time, today's photos are on Facebook if you'd like to see them.  But what I wanted to share tonight is what's next, so there aren't any pictures of the following yet.

  1. Two green (fake) Christmas wreaths to decorate with shells, and a plaque in the center of a Christmas tree on the beach.
  2. Four grapevine wreaths to decorate with shells.
  3. Four caulk boards decorated with rope.
  4. Four Mermaid Princess plaques with mermaid dolls glued to it.
  5. Four children size tote bags to paint on
  6. Decorating jars, that I washed out and spraying the tops with sand paint and gluing shells to the tops
  7. and a message in the bottle...going to recycle my water bottles! This idea just hit me over the head!  Inside: shells, paper umbrella, foam fish and palm tree; will include a shipping label and a beach photo.  I'll spray paint the caps.  I think it will be cute, especially to send and receive!

As I go along I'll post them...but thought I'd share some ideas with you in case you're looking for something to do!

I have to try to get some sleep... hope all is good in your neck of the woods.

Keeping it real...

Sometimes I wonder what I got myself into... so I am going back to my paints, where they don't talk back.  I know it's still early October, but what I can get out of the way, I will.  Before you know it the Art and Crafts Fair will be here and I need to have my hand made wares ready!

Truthfully, the backgrounds don't take long...they actually take longer to dry than they do to paint.  Some I like just the way they come out but putting a finishing touch on them is time consuming too...and I want each one different and unique!

This is what my kitchen looks like right now and it will till I am done.  Aren't I lucky to live alone with the dog?  She's getting used to me sitting at the table for hours.

It takes about an hour just to glue the roping around the edge of wood...
but I like the finished look this has.  At the end of the rope ends, I glued them and a shell to each end to finish it... and I glued some shells and a bit of moss (in a shell) to the island.  I wish I could think of something for coconuts!

glued end of rope with a shell

with all the shells, good deserted island!
I'm still working on my flamingo and going for a quirky one at that!

Somewhere I have a pink feather that I want to snip for the top of the head... I like the way this lie looks as a trim but one is not enough...and I painted flip flops on the flamingo!  SO, to be continued!

I'm trying to figure out how to finish off the canvas boards and attach something to hang it with.  Honey bunches of Oats is my snack!

I took a walk to the dumpster earlier and came back with a resin chair that I will paint also and sell at the craft fair and some branches!

and was still trying to figure out how to finish off the canvas boards.... and it all continues.

Have a great day!

Making of a Mermaind sign!

I was going to do this free hand but opted to pull out the stencils instead.  Then I printed out this mermaid from The Graphics Fairy.  She's holding a cute little seal.  I hope it still looks like a seal when I'm done!

mermaid rest

The top says: Mermaid Rest.  I think this is going on my bathroom door.  I'm still trying to figure out what I am doing to the door.

Anyway, I started with a 36 inch x 3 inch hobby wood (I think it's balsam wood?) I cut it almost in half with a razor.  Glued it together with E-6000 glue.  I used the stencils and a pencil to spell out "Mermaid Rest".  I then positioned the print out on the board and used painters tape to secure it; and just traced over the mermaid pushing firmly to leave a groove in the wood.

I then use a black permanent marker to trace over everything to be able to see it.  (This may have been a mistake.)  I used a stencil to outline the stars, hoping they will look like starfish at the end.  (we'll see.)

I wrote inside the stars.

Again, using painters tape, I taped it roughly in thirds, but did no measuring.  I sanded the glue in the center.  I used a pickled white in the middle and driftwood for the two sides.  I did the same on the back.

mermaid sign

NOTE TO SELF:  Self, the next time, bring it inside right away to dry.  Stain does not dry well in the heat and humidity! ~me

After a few hours outside and still getting stain on my fingers, I brought it in to hopefully help it dry. The black "permanent" ink seemed to run in the white stain. (that's what may have been my mistake.  Stain first, stencil and use marker after.)

I got an idea from The Lord of the Things 's Mermaids.  He uses caulk... you have to go check his page out.  His work is unbelievable and inspiring!!  I love it.

Anyway, I used caulk and a plastic fork to do her hair, scales on her body, the fins of the baby seal, his whiskers, and a little on his back.  Now, I have to be patient and let it all dry.

still need work on that seam.

OK Self, I think it was a BIG mistake to use E-6000 glue on this project. I think any other glue would have been a better but most probably should have used WOOD GLUE!! duh!!

I now will be trying to scrape off as much as I can and possibly re-glue... we'll see.  Oh, it still feels like tacky glue and the stain along that line just comes off on my fingers when I touch it! darn!!

I sanded and scraped off the glue and with it came some stain but as I was working on it, I realized I probably should have stained last or had the patience to stain and let dry in a non-humid place, maybe a couple of days.  But that didn't happen so I'm working with what I have.

I used a green glitter pen to outline the seaweed above here hair; a gold glitter pen around the caulk of her hair. Then mixed a dark brown, white and yellow to pounce her hair.   I'm not sure my baby otter looks like an otter, so I may will be working on him.  After painting her body, I used another glittered aqua paint for depth and highlights, and started to use it to outline the stars and letters.

If to do it over, after tracing everything in pencil, I would have started painting.  I was anxious to see the difference between the two stains on bare wood; to get an idea of what I'd like to use on new plank floors (in the future).  I still don't know.

I think I might also paint over the writing in the stars and work on it to be more starfish-like...and use the caulk for depth and texture.  For now, I have to let everything dry again!

I did the stars over...caulk and paint...

It's these little kind of crafts I love on hot days or days after I've pushed to much physically.  If I were to do this over, I'd do it differently  but every time I go back to work on it, I try to make it better.  But I like it and I love the sitting and creating...and it's mine!  My next sign is "Paradise Found" with palm trees for my bedroom door...if I ever finish this one!

I worked a bit on the baby seal and I think he is looking better.  I used the aqua glitter paint to add a water and wave look. I added some silver glitter to the starfish for some glistening look.

I am going to trim with rope and give it an easy hanger... and of course add shells.  I'm just not sure about it's finishing!

I trimmed the sign with rope, gave a quick coat on and off of the pickled white stain (I wouldn't do that again), repainted letters. glued on shells with caulk and painted the white caulk with dabs of aqua glitter paint, tied a knot with rope and the scissors is kinda holding it in place to dry.

almost done

I think I want to do some more...

What I did learn:
  • Do all the staining FIRST!
  • Then use pencil only to use tracing stencils and cut outs; don't use the marker or actually use stencil and paint;
  • Use the caulk to outline and embellish;
  • Use real star fish instead of star stencils;
  • DON'T use stain over the paint and glitter; it takes away the vibrancy of the colors and looks kinda dull;
  • Do better with lining up the middle (knot off centered).

Either way you do it... HAVE FUN!  It's one of a kind and made by you!!

Still want to do something to the door, but I don't know what yet!

I love this paint!

I love this paint!  I keep looking for anything I might be able to spray! It comes in other colors but this one looks like beach sand!

cap color!

I recently used it for these remakes:

I first used it on the bottom shelf of this table.

It was the perfect background for the shells on this drawer.

Worked well on the plastic jar lid for a shell top.
I also want to spray and piece of cement to see if it sticks and makes it look like a pile of sand; spray some bottles and add shells for flowers... who knows.

What would you use it for?

Country Sampler | Decorate with Crafts | Fun in the Sunroom

Over the weekend, the little beach on a tray was floating around.  It was very cute and the cute bathing beauties are almost $40 for the pair.  But when I got to the article that the picture was attached to, I thought I'd share it with you, as it has great ideas for not only "fun in the sun room" but any room.

Country Sampler | Decorate with Crafts | Fun in the Sunroom

1. Find a replacement.  To warm up the cool palette of Bev’s blue-and-white sunroom, Sally-Jo and Catherine introduced punches of red, including a pair of square red tables standing in for a wicker coffee table that matches the area’s other furniture. “If you want to change up your furniture but can’t find the right piece, think about what you can alter or put together to get a new look,” Sally-Jo advises. “A pair of slatted tables was just the thing here.”

2. Go on a virtual vacation.
“Summer is all about fun, so apply that attitude to a table display,” Catherine says. “We created a beach in a tray by combining sand, seashells and some cute little figurines. The tray keeps the sand from getting everywhere, and you can easily move it out of the way if necessary.”

3. Ignite interest.
More cheery decor, such as a sparkly firecracker accent, a patriotic hatbox or a trio of wood flag-themed accents (bottom left), can lend extra pizzazz to an end table.

4. Earn your stripes.
More cheery decor, such as a sparkly firecracker accent, a patriotic hatbox or a trio of wood flag-themed accents (bottom left), can lend extra pizzazz to an end table. “If you want your room to be summery but you don’t want to go overboard with Americana elements, pick textiles, such as pillows or a rug, with stripes that hint at a more patriotic motif,” Sally-Jo says. “You can interpret ‘stars and stripes’ in lots of different ways!”

5. Play around.More stripes pop up on a croquet mallet and ball, which contribute an appropriate dash of sporty style to the summertime scene.

6. Sit and think.  The ample sun room allows space for multiple seating areas, but even a smallish room can accommodate a petite dining set. The stylists dressed Bev’s vintage ice cream table and chairs in a red cloth to suit the room’s makeover and set the stage for more fresh ideas.

7. Square off.
Drape a square quilted wall hanging across a round table to play the quilt’s sharp corners off the furniture’s curved edges. For more shapely dimension, top the wall hanging with more circular accents, including a candle with a complementary palette.

8. Be fruitful.
“Fresh fruit is one of the easiest, least expensive ways to work color and natural zest into your seasonal decorating,” Catherine says. “Start simple with lemon slices in a glass drink dispenser, or get more creative with strawberries, clementines or other citrus fruits piled on a tiered dessert stand.”

9. Sea clearly.
Play up a nautical-by-nature theme with seashells and starfish nestled amid the fruit on the dessert stand or sea grass-like foliage tucked into a red hanging pail. “We also filled spare measuring cups with tiny shells and arranged them on top of the stand,” Sally-Jo adds. “And, miniature flags inserted into each cup add patriotic oomph.”

10. Flag it down.
In addition to the pint-size flags in the measuring cups, the stylists also cleverly repurposed a coordinating hat-shaped candy container as a planter for a sunny potted daisy that rests atop a distressed white shelf.

11. Take a break.
Break up a large, bold-colored wall with artwork that picks up hues or themes from the rest of your room. Sally-Jo and Catherine picked a black-framed garden-themed print to complement the area’s natural elements.

12. Use what you’ve got.
If you collect vintage picnic baskets or old-fashioned coolers, such as the red plaid beverage tote above, bring them out for entertaining to show off your treasures and to serve up drinks in style.

13. Sea it through.  For a touch of seaside charm, the stylists hung a life-ring mirror and a striped beach towel on a sign outfitted with coat hooks, and they rested a stenciled “Beach” sign on a wicker umbrella stand.

14. Contain your collections.
The umbrella stand and a black flower box provide handy spots for displaying more pieces of the croquet set the stylists brought in for its color and charm. Wicker boxes beneath the sofa offer storage and pick up on the texture of the room’s white wicker furniture.

15. Get the blues.  The stylists outfitted the room with more blue-and-white accents to complement the bedding, choosing items that enhance the summery attitude they wanted the room to convey.

16. Coordinate your efforts.
“Bev is a talented seamstress, and she covered her chair cushions with a pretty blue-and-white floral fabric that matches the walls and trim color,” Sally-Jo notes. “To give the sofa more of a daybed feel, we dressed it in a patchwork quilt and pillows that go nicely with Bev’s cushions.” Sally-Jo and Catherine also included Bev’s handmade flag pillow for a subtle dash of red.

17. Continue to impress.
Sally-Jo and Catherine brought repeat elements from other seating areas into this section of the sunroom, including another red-striped rug and a bright crimson watering can holding a cluster of daisies. “Duplicating decor ideas can unite a larger room to make it feel more homey,” Catherine says.

Sands of Time

 18. Be childish.  “Summer is a time when everybody wants to be a kid again, so include at least a few elements in your room that call back to childhood,” Sally-Jo says. “Serve drinks in a sand pail filled with ice. Arrange bright-colored accents, candles or seashells in a decorative wagon, or set a cute figurine on a miniature hill of sand. That fun attitude will be contagious!”
